Why All Three Bureaus Matter

TransUnion is one of the three national credit bureaus, and like the others it keeps its own version of your credit history. TransUnion is also the bureau many landlords, insurers and auto lenders pull, so errors that never show up on the other two reports can still decide an approval.

What You Can Dispute with TransUnion

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act you can dispute anything on your TransUnion report that is inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable. The disputes that succeed most often involve a wrong balance, a payment reported late in the wrong month, a collection listed twice, an account that belongs to someone with a similar name, and a settled debt still showing as owed.

Accurate items stay for their full reporting period — seven years for most negatives, ten for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. TransUnion cannot delete them early, and a company that guarantees it can is not telling you the truth.

How to File a TransUnion Dispute

TransUnion accepts disputes online, by phone and by mail. The online portal gives you a tracking number and is the quickest way to start a straightforward correction. Mail is the better tool when the dispute hinges on documents or when you want an unambiguous record of what you sent and when.

What a strong dispute contains

  • The account name and number, and the exact field you are disputing.
  • One clear sentence on what is wrong and what the correct data is.
  • Supporting documentation: statements, a paid-in-full or settlement letter, an FTC identity theft report.
  • Your identifying details as they appear on the report, plus the file or report number.

The 5 Points of Compliance Difference

Our approach goes beyond basic disputes. We examine how negative items are reported, documented, and maintained — then challenge them based on compliance issues, not just accuracy.

How Long Does a TransUnion Dispute Take?

TransUnion has 30 days to investigate and respond, extended to 45 days when you add information during the process. You receive the outcome in writing, and anything that cannot be verified as accurate has to be corrected or removed.

If the result says verified and you still believe the item is wrong, that is not a dead end. You can dispute again with new proof, dispute the furnisher directly, attach a statement of dispute to the account, or escalate with a CFPB complaint.

Why All Three Bureaus Matter

TransUnion, Equifax and Experian do not compare notes. Furnishers report separately, on their own schedule, so the same account can be right on one file and wrong on another. A single-bureau cleanup leaves the other two able to sink an application, and most mortgage decisions are made from all three reports.

Getting the Whole File Fixed

We review all three reports together, identify which items are actually challengeable, and build disputes around the specific requirement each one breaks. Where the same debt is being reported by a collector and the original creditor, both entries get addressed rather than only the obvious one.
