Dispute One Bureau, or All Three?

Experian is one of the three national credit bureaus, and it keeps its own version of your credit file. An item can be wrong on your Experian report and correct on the other two, which is why a dispute has to be filed with Experian specifically. The dispute right is free and comes from the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and you can use it yourself at any time.

What You Can Dispute with Experian

You can dispute anything on your Experian report that is inaccurate, incomplete or cannot be verified by the company that reported it. In practice that usually means accounts that are not yours, balances that do not match your records, duplicate collections, payments reported late when they were on time, accounts still showing a balance after they were paid or settled, and the same debt listed twice by a collector and the original creditor.

What you cannot do is have accurate information removed because you would prefer it gone. A late payment that really happened stays for seven years, and an accurate bankruptcy stays for ten. Any company that promises to delete accurate items is promising something the law does not allow.

How to File an Experian Dispute

Experian accepts disputes online through its dispute portal, by mail, and by phone. The online route is the fastest to open and gives you a status to track, but it limits how much supporting documentation you can attach. Mail still matters when the dispute depends on documents, because there is a paper trail of exactly what you sent and when.

What to include in the dispute

  • The account name, number and the specific field you say is wrong — the balance, the dates, the status or the ownership of the account.
  • A plain statement of what the report says and what the correct information is.
  • Any proof you have: statements, a paid-in-full letter, a settlement agreement, a police or FTC identity theft report.
  • Your identifying information exactly as it appears on the report, plus the report number.

The 5 Points of Compliance Difference

Our approach goes beyond basic disputes. We examine how negative items are reported, documented, and maintained — then challenge them based on compliance issues, not just accuracy.

How Long Does an Experian Dispute Take?

Experian has 30 days to investigate and respond, counted from the day it receives your dispute. The window extends to 45 days if you supply additional information during the investigation, or when the dispute is based on a free annual report and extra documentation arrives mid-cycle. You get the results in writing, and the disputed item has to be corrected or deleted if it cannot be verified.

Do not read a "verified" result as proof the item is right. Verification can be thin, and it does not end your options: you can dispute again with new evidence, dispute directly with the furnisher, add a statement of dispute to your file, or file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Dispute One Bureau, or All Three?

All three, every time. Experian, Equifax and TransUnion do not share files with each other, so an item deleted from Experian will usually still sit on the other two reports. Lenders choose which bureau to pull, and a mortgage application is often scored on a middle score drawn from all three.

When a Dispute Is Worth Professional Help

Doing it yourself is a legitimate choice and the process is free. It becomes hard when the same items come back verified month after month, when several accounts and collectors are tangled together, or when you are fighting a deadline like a mortgage pre-approval. That is where a compliance-based process earns its keep: a full three-bureau review, disputes built on the specific section of the law the reporting breaks, and a documented record you can escalate with.
